Sometimes, even in a successful team, there is always that player/person who is a passenger i.e. a person who is not putting the same amount of effective work as his colleagues or teammates. I’m here to say that the President of the United States is, at this stage in his presidency, effectively a “political passenger”.
He has not had one piece of major legislative agenda passed into law, such as health care, tax reform or infrastructure. He has left all of the grinding work to the Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. He has done nothing to persuade people to favor his health care bill (even though it’s a horrible, horrible bill). As President, he is supposed to hold some sway over the American people.
There are reports that he doesn’t even consume the full intelligence briefings, which means that the most powerful man in the world may not be aware of all the nuances in a sensitive foreign policy issue such as North Korea or Syria. He has delegated the job of increasing/decreasing the number of troops in Afghanistan or Syria or Iraq to Defense Secretary James Mattis, so he is slowly taking away civilian control from the military (which can be very dangerous).
Immigration reform was passed by the House, not Trump. His Travel Ban was reinstated by the Supreme Court, I admit, but the administration will have to argue as to its supposed positive effects.
So what has POTUS done in 5 months since taking office? Firing off tweets insulting private citizens like the ex-FBI Director James Comey and television commentators Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, insult world allies, repeal regulations that were protecting the environment and deflect from the Russia investigation calling it a “witch hunt”. Oh, and he has also denigrated the reputation of the United States in the eyes of the world.
